Here, we learn all about Terlu Perla, she who created Caz, the sentient spider plant in The Spellshop. We meet the Gardener of an enchanted greenhouse on the distant island of Belde. Terlu "wakes up" with some magical assistance from the Gardener, and then her adventures begin--she meets Lotti and a whole host of additional sentient plants created by a now-deceased sorcerer. Many, many honey cakes are baked and happily consumed. There is, of course, a happily ever after all around. More of this world, please, Ms Durst. Marin next?

Much like the first one this book was a great and comforting read. I wasn't sure if I would like it more or less than The Spellshop but I think I liked this book even more. I loved the characters and as much as I missed the characters from the first book this just expanded the world even more. I found myself emotionally connecting more with some of the characters and their struggles. I also found so many more quoteable lines in this one. Overall if you like a feel good story like Legends and Lattes, House on the Cerulean Sea, or The Spellshop then you will have a great time with this book.
Spoiler Thoughts
Spoiler Thoughts
- I didn’t know anything about this book and who it would follow. I wasn’t expecting it to follow Terlu the Librarian who created Kaz.
- Who broke the spell on Terlu? Her stumbling on the greenhouse and meeting the cat.
- Yarrow being the only one left on the island. It sounds like the sorcerer dismissed everyone but I’m wondering why Yarrow didn’t want to leave. Maybe he didn’t mind being by himself.
- We have a new Kaz. Loti! She is cute. I think I like Kaz more but she is welcome member of the cast.
- Terlu, Yarrow, and Loti working together to figure out how to decipher the sorcerers book. Them going through the maze greenhouse. Loti getting picked up by the little dragons. The little dragons loving honeycomb! The dragons accepting chocolate for the code book and then shooting little fireworks as they leave. So cute!
- Man the sorcerer sounds like a piece of work. Why did he want to put the plants to sleep and neglect them? Loti doesn’t want to believe that that sorcerer stopped caring or maybe never did.
- The discussion with Yarrow and Terlu for some reason really hit me. Where she is talking about the reason the sorcerer might have done what he did and then asking Yarrow who takes care of him.
- The plant dance party! So cute that when Yarrow and Terlu walk in they were dancing and making jokes.
- Finding out about the Sorcerer was also sad. The fact that he could understand that his daughter wanted to leave. That she had to sneak off and then she died. Hopefully she didn’t die alone.
- The plants all trying to save the plants from the burning/freezing greenhouse.
- Yarrow the chef! Everything he makes sounds delicious.
- Terlu getting into Yarrow’s bed. I wasn’t sure what would happen but the kiss was cute! Unfortunately, they weren’t able to really enjoy the moment.
- Yarrow telling her “If your hurt your hurt. It doesn’t matter if anyone thinks you don’t have a good enough reason. Pain doesn’t require approval.” Damn Yarrow dropping bombs!
- Terlu and Yarrow searching the caves for the shells with the dragons! Yarrow telling Terlu that she isn’t alone. They are so cute. I love how both characters have been exactly what they needed and both have moments that they help each other.
- Marin bringing a book that she bought in the cutest little jam shop from Caltrey. Wonder who wrote that ;). I wanted a reunion with Terlu with Kaz but that might have to wait for another book. Marin also bringing Rijes. I figured she would find her but it was still great for her to show up.
- I just found out that the third book has already been announced. Sea of Charms it is definitely going to be about Marin. That is so cool! I liked Marin and can’t wait to read about her adventures.
