Shards of Earth

4.1 AVERAGE

adventurous medium-paced

I've been reading mostly fantasy and some political nonfiction lately.

Oh man how do I miss a good Scifi novel. While the plot had similarities to Mass Effect it was very engaging. The diversity of species made it even better. The Hive, a cluster of insects sharing a consciousness piloting a robot made sense to me.

Tchaikovsky is also quite talented at lending to a protagonist with a reasonable empathetic mind. In terrible battles it's nice to have a person to bring comfort during dark times, even for the reader. I've found he has added a character just for this in another one of his novels.

This author has paid homage to all the award winning classics and made his own spin on things with a pleasant prose. It does feel cheap but rather a modernist take for an entirely new generation of scifi fans.

When the second novel goes on sale, I will probably purchase it.

Really good, in the vein of the Expanse series

The biggest strength of this book is (for me) probably also its biggest weakness. I love how creative Tchaikovsky is at coming up with genuinely alien species and societies, with their own physiological, psychological and linguistic quirks. But there are just too many of them in this book for me to wrap my head around, and it prevents me from empathizing strongly enough with any of the (many) main characters. I think I'd rather have a deeper focus on one group, rather than equal time given to so many.

A great, action-packed space opera.

I am generally a bit wary of vert action oriented space operas, but Tchaikovsky did not disappoint with this one.

I enjoyed the world-building, with lots of different races interesting races (which I would like to know more about), factions, and mysterious adversaries.

The characters were good, but we do not learn enough about them since the book is very story driven.

more in the 2.5-2.75 range, but i'm rounding down
