Both the deepest and broadest sci-fi I have read in the last decade (modulo the same authors' children of time series). Unparalleled world building, immaculate character development, unique (at least to me) story and themes. Can't wait for the next book in the sequence.

Thus far, my only reading experience with Tchaikovsky is the Children of Time series and his novel Service Model. All of these were compelling reads, making me want to read even more of his wonderful sci-fi.

So how does Shards of Earth fare? Quite well actually. This story falls very much into the space opera vein, something like The Expanse or Mass Effect. We get a ragtag group of humans and aliens banding together to fight an overwhelming threat to the galaxy in an unknowable alien species called The Architects.

All in all, I really enjoyed it. The characters were well done, and the action pieces were entertaining. I'll definitely be finishing the entire trilogy.

DID NOT FINISH: 66%

Interesting beginning, lackluster from there. Narrative felt sporadic and keyed in on too many unnecessary details.
