I was disappointed. The dialog is like a Marvel movie, the characters act like high schoolers (or maybe anime characters, always expressing exactly how they feel), and there’s not much in the way of ideas or sense-of-wonder to make up for the middling prose. Endless fight scenes abound, and boy are they a slog to get through. It suffers a lot from “first book in a trilogy syndrome” — nothing really happens with the main plot until the very end of the book, and then it’s basically just a cliffhanger.

There’s much better space opera out there — read Banks or Hamilton instead if you’re in the mood for stuff like this.

Felt like a mix between The Expanse (the tv show) and the books of Becky Chambers.

I think the only thing that prevented me from rating this book 5 stars is that I would've preferred it as being only one point of view. I understand in some respects that there was a lot the reader go through the multiple perspectives, but I often think what is gained is not equal to what is lost when it comes to that.
Otherwise I loved the world building and thought all the different characters were intriguing and all the different worlds and aliens presented a rich world ripe for me to get lost in.

I read this just before Romulus came out and that visual style is all I could imagine the whole read.

Took a decent bit for me to get into this, but when it worked, it worked... It's satisfying as a standalone, but it's definitely enticed me to read the sequels! Luckily this is Tchaikovsky we're talking about here, so they'll likely be here soon enough.
