Somewhat standard space opera with interesting world building and the now standard found-family trope. Enjoyable story by a talented writer but not earth shaking. Well ok yes Earth is shaken but ya know.

The writing is occasionally rough, especially in the beginning. The preexisting relationship between two main characters is not explored enough and does not feel believable. Otherwise it's a decent sci-fi read, a solid specimen of the genre.

So I really enjoyed this book. It had a lot I really liked, but has some significant flaws if I'm being honest.

The highlights:
  • The characters are interesting and likeable (mostly)
  • The world building is very interesting and has stuff that I at least found novel.
  • The plot moves fairly quickly and has some fun tense moments, I was never bored.
The lowlights:
  • There's a couple character conflicts that don't get adequately resolved. My interpretation is that the narrative thinks it's resolved them but it was unsatisfying to me. Spoiler:
Specifically Solace's and Olli's conflict about what Parthenon means to them and how Olli sort of must view that sort of society as evil as it won't let her exist. And Solace briefly things about how maybe that's true but decides near the end of the book that "what it means to her is not bad stuff so it's not bad" and that's not particularly satisfying to me.
  • The plot structure(?) is repetitive.
Specifically the fact that the crew of the Vulture God don't feel like they have a lot of agency and mostly repeat the following throughout the book: go to a place to do a thing; oh no! something bad but exciting happens! Gotta leave; repeat. The plot feels driven forward primarily through the characters getting interrupted by action scenes.

didn't grab me at all sadly. perfectly competent but nothing really interesting going on
