A poor orphan boy manages to keep his goodness in tact, despite attacks from all sides.
I love Dickens. Sure, a lot of the plot twists were way too convenient, and the fact that he's getting paid by the word quickly becomes obvious, but what words. The wry descriptions of how the poor were treated in Victorian England are a masterpiece, and the characters, both good and bad, are so alive. I know them all, and who cares if Oliver gets a too neat and tidy ending, he deserves it.

Dickens absolutely stunts on a changing England by depicting all the mess and discomfort of criminal society, and makes clear the responsibility of the law in creating it. Excellent: sarcastic, witty, somber, and not just biting, but full on chomping.
I really don't remember this story being so dark and sinister! This is my first time reading the book, but I have seen the musical (1968) version of the film several times when I was younger, although I don't really remember much of it now. Without all the songs, which probably do make the whole thing a bit more light hearted, I guess it is just a story of a young boy who escapes the workhouse, goes and lives/works with a gang of pickpockets, and eventually good things do come to him, but on the whole it is really quite dark. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy it though, I thought it was really good.
