I loved every minute of this series, Lou and Reid's relationship pulled me in. They're as stubborn as each other and overcome so much to be with each other. I was devasted at one of the deaths, it took me a while to get over it as sad as that sounds I really wish they could have stuck around but the lead up to their death hooked me.

Actual rating: 3.5 stars, rounded up because I really did enjoy reading this quite a lot.
Essentially, this book was better than the second book but still not as good as the first. I, for one, I'm glad I read it. The things I love about this series are all present in this book:
- The almost-cozy, fantasy adventure setting, which by the end has ALL the magical things. <3
- The humorous tone that works so well for me (and is the primary reason I will be checking out future titles by this author)
- The irascible yet big-hearted Lou (I don't hate Reid, I just like him a lot less ;) )
- The heart-warming found family that surrounds Lou, and Reid, made up of loveable characters who embody the recurring themes of love, in its many forms, and second-chances.
For all these reasons, plus, and a conclusion that I personally found quite satisfying, I still really, really enjoyed this book, and I'm glad I read it. Unfortunately, my reading of it was far less than smooth, thus the rating.
The problems created by the second book being mostly filler were exacerbated by the fact this book is also significantly longer than the first two books. I certainly don't mind long books, but this series was already longer than it needed to be at the start of this book and the last thing it needed was an extra 100 pages. So this book, like second one, drags quite a bit, specifically in the middle. We get some interesting developments, plot and character-wise, but all of that is weighed down by the narrative once again going in circles at different points, much like it did in the second book. If you still want to press ahead and finish this series, and I can say I'm glad that I did, just make sure you're aware that this concluding installment doesn't really fix the problems that plague the rest of the series.

uh, MERMAIDS and their entire underwater kingdom, ancient gods, AND a dragon and her not-so-in-distress-damsel?!
