The writing was wonderful and the only reason I kept reading. The ending was less than satisfying.
Look I loooove Emma Cline’s short stories. And I loved The Girls…I hate this.
The main character was dull and selfish. 290 pages of her thoughts was painful. Same vibe as My Year of Rest and Relaxation. Completely different story, but characters are written similarly and are similar. Only giving it a second star bc of the end tbh.

This whole book felt like a fever dream… I didn’t think I would like it at first but found it weirdly captivating. The ending was so abrupt which was disappointing

Read this because of Jack Edwards’ 5 star recommendation - and I couldn’t disagree more
Yes, it is a car crash you can’t look away from. But also, it’s just a bit boring ultimately. All her interactions with her various grifts feel sort of the same, she keeps checking her phone, keeps drinking, keeps taking the pills. Round and round for 150 pages.You’re waiting for the big payoff but there just isn’t one. Dom doesn’t do anything. Simon doesn’t do anything. Wtf is the point?
To a certain extent it’s interesting to read about someone who isn’t a very good conwoman. But, it’s not really explored beyond ‘tell people what they want to hear and be bland’.It would have made a more entertaining read if it was more up and down, so you didn’t know how each interaction would go, rather than just down and down and down . The only interesting grift is with the toddler, because manipulating a child is a very different situation, but even then it doesn’t do much.
I don’t regret reading this because it was pretty quick. But, the prose is nothing special, and the plot is boring in spite of me wanting to know what happens. It’s just all very samey.
