Okay, wow- this book is haunting. The writing style consists of two friends and former business partners writing to one another through letters during the start of Hitler's rise to power in Germany (though years before WWII officially begins). One friend, a Jewish gallerist, lives in San Fransisco, and the other moves back to Germany. What ensues in these letters is heartbreaking, eye-opening to the brutal ugliness of that time, and showcases a glimpse of what it felt like to be Jewish while all of this is happening.
It's a classic for a reason (and an incredibly quick read) and will surely stick with me for a long time to come.

This was a short read but it picked a big punch! I loved how these letters progressed and showed just how insidious nazism can be even to those you’d never believe could be susceptible. Very poignant even today.
My brother said that it was a happy story…he fucking lied

This book left me absolutely speechless (believe it or not). It is written as a serious of letters between two life long friends, one a Jew living in America and one a German who returned to the homeland as their business flourished. These letters begin in 1932 and finish in 1934 and reflect the rise to power of Hitler and the Nazi party and how this affected the views of the German people and ultimately those outside Germany. The chilling simplicity of these letters and the change from friend to foe is in a word terrifying, more so because this was written in 1938 before the start of the Second World War and the Holocaust. These letters go to show how easily a desperate country can be turned from an educated intelligent nation into a bigoted hatred fueled dictatorship. This deserves far more global recognition and should be a must read for any student of the Holocaust and, more importantly, the rest of us to show how easily we can descend into hell.

The ending gave me goosebumps. Written in 1938 about Nazi Germany plus me knowing what was yet to come. Chilling.
