Introspective and, I’m sure, astounding for its time. Succeeded at its goal of informing the American public of what was happening to Germans during WWII and how they were poisoned by Nazism. Quick read.

first published in 1938, 'address unknown' shares a series of (fictional) letters between martin schulse and max einstein. max is a jewish art dealer that lives in san francisco, while martin has returned to his beloved germany.

the short novel demonstrates the rise of fascism and hitler in germany and how he convinced millions of everday citizens to vote for the national socialist party (nazis) and to hail hitler as a 'savior'. we see how this affects the relationship between martin and max. the rise of hitler slowly turning martin against his old friend, max. max can neither believe nor understand this change from martin, so it also delves into the feelings max has. it is a cautionary tale of nationalist intolerance and the infringement of human rights.

this very short work delivered a very strong and alarming account. overall it is a sad, disturbing, but very important read

Such a strong, insightful piece. Good short story to test the waters with historical fiction if you're interested.
