The story of Pip and his great expectations of going from a poor boy to a gentleman, spurned by his love for the cold-hearted Estella. There were so many surprising twists and turns that I genuinely never saw coming, but were wonderfully crafted into the story. It was emotional at some points and hilarious in others. The class commentary was a pleasant surprise for me and the ending was beautifully done!

I was fond of this book when I read it in high school.
Now, I associate it with the Miss Havisham character from the Thursday Next series, which is also a good thing!

This, I think, proves to me that I do in fact like Dickens and shouldn't write off an author just because I was a kid once and thought old people were boring. I was a little confused if the big reveal was supposed to actually be a surprise or not. It seemed so obvious and telegraphed that I assumed it was meant to be understood by the reader from the start but it was presented as if it was as big a shock to the reader as it was to pip.
I'd put off reading it because I thought I knew the story but it turns out I didn't know it so well after all. I can see why it's such a popular Dickens. A gripping and enjoyable read.
