So far so good. This book is about coming up in life, almost escaping one's past, and finding out that somethings refuse to be left behind.

I initially read this novel seventeen years ago. I recall enjoying it but nothing stuck with me. After a bit more living and the ups and downs of life, this novel really hit home. Its themes and questions include how mobility (economic and social) can change our perception and morals, whether moral redemption can truly happen, and whether broken relationships can ever truly be restored to their former state. There are I'm sure book-length explorations of Pip's great expectations, and I'll seek some out. But for now, I'll be thinking about whether I am meeting my own.

Pip really does learn a lot in what I think it would be fair to say is a fairly quiet story. The events, when they take place, are entertaining enough but a lot of the characters are pretty one note - I think to facilitate the Dickens style of storytelling - but I don't regret picking this up at all.
