Bekter is a bastard, Eeluk is a bastard, Wen Chao, Temujin is a bastard but also the protagonist so we’ll let it slide for now. Hoelun is the greatest. 8/10.

This was a really good story that kept you gripped almost the entire time and makes you want to leap to the next book in the series. There is a good balance of action with other events so it doesn't feel like it's too violence-centered. The book also does a good job at describing the setting of this foreign place in a different time period, and the depth of research is clear from the descriptions and events. It also seems that it does not deviate greatly from the original source of the story, so it is somewhat vaguely educational.

I read this because a student recommended it to me and their excitement over where I was heavily impacted my reading experience.
The book itself is well researched from what I can tell. It has some super fast paced moments, and then others that dragged a bit, but I’m a slow reader so I’m sure other people just sped through those.
The battle scenes were very descriptive, and there is certainly some content warnings to be considered.
I wish for more Hoelun (Temujin’s mother) she was the best.
