I love when books give me the opportunity to become aware. But there is a heaviness in knowing that the theme of being othered can connect so many across the globe. 

Due to the themes the books was very heavy at times and difficult to move through. Knowing that it is based on true events filled me with sadness.

Miyoung’s story of adversity, coming of age, love, and bravery sucked me in. I enjoyed learning more about this time in Asian history that I never really heard about before during the world war era. This book was beautifully written and captivating.

I’ve read a lot of books about this particular era, Especially while living in Korea. It was good but the best part was knowing that this was a true story told from a grandmother to her granddaughter.
