Rosa Kwon Easton writes the story of her grandmother’s experience so beautifully that it’s hard not to be engaged from the start. There’s always a focus on what’s happened during WWII when it comes to the West but no one talks about what’s happened in the East. For me, it’s just what I hear from my own grandmother, so to hear about it from someone else and in a different presentation brings a clearer picture. Miyoung’s journey in Korea, to her travels and years spent in Japan as Miyoko, to her subsequent return to Korea is so well told. 

I loved White Mulberry more than I thought I would. I tend to be picky when it comes to my historical fiction but something about this one called out to me. This is the story of a young woman’s growth and finding oneself against the backdrop of war and impossibilities especially against women. I’m really glad I read this and I really encourage you to pick it up too!
