This book had really good writing & storytelling, but I felt like it was way too long. There were so many pieces and it just kept going on and on and on and on. It was entertaining but definitely really depressing. There’s a certain mood you have to be in to read this kind of book, and I was just not in that mood. It was still good, though.
One gripe I have about the audiobook is that the music was TOO LOUD!!! Whenever there was a chapter where they tell a fairy tale/story, this horrible music was BLASTING throughout the whole narration, and it was actually so loud that I could not even hear what the narrator was saying. They need to fix the audiobook and turn down that music!! I could not hear anything in all those chapters. Chill out with the music! It was a nice perk for the audiobook, but it just needs to be turned down so you can actually hear the narrator.

This book was nothing like what i expected and i loved it all the more for that. The deeply explored themes of women’s rights; of the ties between family, sisterhood, and the burden all women bare; the reminders that the history of women’s rights and the suffragist movement was not kind to its sisters of color, or trans sisters; the whole narrative was deep, beautiful, and powerful in what it had to say. This story asks the question - what if the victims of history didn’t just want equality - what if they wanted justice? What if they wanted revenge?
I love the way Harrow weaves together the history of the women’s suffrage movement with the brutal and fantastical landscape of the Salem witch hunts - but this time the witches being hunted really are witches. I love that Harrow adds flavor and intrigue through the use of nursery rhymes we all know and love, made eerie through intent and the voice authors wonderful acting.
The characters are beautifully morally grey, and face impossible decisions with courage, strength, and resiliency. There’s a lot more i could say but overall I’m glad i read this book!

“That’s all magic is, really: the space between what you have and what you need.”
I started this just after it was published but had to step away from it because I was in a reading rut at the time. But I grabbed it when it was an Audible Daily Deal a few months ago because I knew I’d love it when the time was right for me. And I did!
Set in the late 1800s, three sisters are reunited in New Salem. They join up with the local suffragette movement and use their witchy ways to fight for women’s rights. They learn that witches throughout the centuries have been passing on their spells to their children through the nursery rhymes and lullabies that we all know so well, so the words are accessible to all of us but the magic only appears when we desperately need it.
