I read this because I like Krysten Ritter, but was pleasantly surprised at how well written and developed the story and characters were. A good mystery novel.

I'm going to be honest, going into this book I didn't expect much because I bought the book for the sole reason of absolutely adoring Krysten Ritter, but god did I enjoy this, it's fast-paced and I was always on the edge of my seat while reading it, the plot is original and realistic and Abby was a relatable character in so many ways, the characters are complex and Krysten did a great job in shaping every single character, even Kaycee who was absent throughout the entire book, Definitely re-reading it soon!

I love Ritter, and I wanted to love this but I just didn't. The story didn't feel super cohesive, and it was hard to like the main character. It seemed like there was a whole lot of nothing actually happening even though the narrative and main character were trying to convince us stuff was happening. Abby was astoundingly bad at her job and just painted as incompetent.....I kept wondering how she actually got to this point.

Oof. This was weird. Dark, far fetched and just....weird. Of COURSE there is an annoying protagonist. And my goodness does she jump to conclusions quickly and often. Her theories while trying to solve a mystery almost felt redunant and excessive. I don't know...the "thriller" genre feels pretty tired with this one. It's a "meh" from me.

After two very disappointed DNFs, a 3 star for this book is a pretty solid place. This book is very clearly a combo of Erin Brokovitch x Mean Girls + a dash of L&O SVU. But it was entertaining and the way she captured returning home to a small town, and reconnecting with people you knew in high school (definitely not friends) was spot on and so accurate.

Look, the rating only reflects my personal review.
The book was good. Well written, smooth pace, interesting premise that kept surprise after surprise coming.

For me, meh. Tired of the questionable protagonist, not that interested in high school dramas, plus it did carry some pretty standard tropes (2 men fighting over the unpopular but surprisingly pretty girl).

For what it was, I would rate 4 stars. Just not my cup of tea.

This was the first book I read after years and years of not reading for pleasure. So, to get lucky enough that my first book "back in the game" was a great thriller, was wonderful. That could make me a bit biased though. The rush of something new and exciting is just that... new and exciting. But if you're looking for an easy mystery to knock out on the beach or a long plane ride, this is it. It's engrossing and kept me guessing for the most part, even though the story might be a little bit overdone. (Small town girl goes back to where she's from after getting a big-girl lawyer/detective job, only to get sucked back in by people from her past.) But the fact that it's been told before means it holds up over time. Highly recommended, even beside the fact that the author is a famous actress.

I personally had never heard of Krysten Ritter before, but I have definitely taken an interest in the name now. This was a very enjoyable, easy read. I personally enjoyed the plot and the writing style. Sure maybe there were one or two plot associations that just didn’t feel real to me (thinking of the collar as an example here), but this didn’t affect my overall enjoyment of the read.

I listened to this one on audio and really enjoyed the narrator. I enjoyed probably the first half, maybe two-thirds, but then it started to go downhill. The main character really started to get on my nerves and turn into kind of an idiot, the plot became super predictable, and I really just didn't get Abby's fixation with her past. Why did she care so much? I actually forgot at one point that the main character was no longer in high school. So many things that she said and did were the words and actions of a teenager, and I was so confused about how she felt towards people. First she hates her dad so much that she doesn't stay with him when she's in town. Then she's so loving and caring toward him, then she hates him. And it's like that with so many characters. Finally, I was really annoyed that I was able to determine the pivotal event the second it was hinted at. That's not what I want in a mystery/thriller.

All in all, this was a good debut, and I really think Krysten Ritter could go somewhere as a writer. I think most of my problems with the book were from a personal standpoint, rather than a reader's. I still think I would recommend this to lighter mystery readers.
