I didn’t like the Lena/Ethan storyline at all, but the rest was alright.

This one wasn't my favorite. The author seemed to take a lot of liberties with police and crime scene procedures. This one was a bit far fetched for me. And on a gruesome scale it was off the charts. Its only saving grace for me was the very ending...now I must read the next book.

I enjoy the telling of this series more than the stories

This one was okay, but the mystery wasn't nearly as intriguing as the other two books so it was a bit less enjoyable all around. That cliffhanger ending was good though and I liked the character moments we got...although I really don't disagree with the way one of the relationships went (*cough* Lena and Ethan *cough*).

I’m a big fan of Karin Slaughter (Pretty Girls is my highest rated read of hers) but this did fall a little flat to me. I wasn’t massively shocked by the big reveal.

Also I know these books were originally published in the early 2000s but the constant fatphobia (from both male and female characters) and references to someone being sexual coming out of total left field and adding nothing to the plot were distracting for me.

Examples -

“Sara’s mother was a beautiful woman with just a little gray in her long blond hair. She must have been close to sixty, but she still had a lot going for her. There was something sexy and down-to-earth” - This is his ex wife and on again/off again partner’s mother, by the way.

“Diane Sanders was of average height and build with the most beautiful gray hair Jeffrey had ever seen. On the surface she was fairly unremarkable, but there was a raw sexuality underneath that always took Jeffrey by surprise.”

“She rose from her desk, surprisingly spry in her tight velour miniskirt and Lycra top. She walked across the room in high heels that would have broken a lesser woman’s ankles, flicking back her platinum white hair as she pulled open one of the file drawers. She was not overweight by any means, but a flap of skin under her arm jiggled as she ran her finger along a series of folders.”

So book #3 - I still can't stand Lena and Sarah gets on my nerves only slightly less than her. This storyline wasn't as good for me as the first books. Still starting #4 to see if either woman gets better.

3.5/5

I am so torn between rating this down because of how irritated and frustrated Lena made me or rating up because of how well Slaughter was able to show what severe trauma can make a person into. Not all survivors of trauma become nothing but scared shrunken versions of themselves. Sometimes who we become after trauma for the worse, especially if not working through what happened and getting help. That is exactly the direction Slaughter took with her. I also wanted to smack everybody for how they were 'trying' to help her because obviously nothing was working. Overall, Slaughter continues to be a fantastic writer. This one has definitely been my least favorite of the series so far and I might take some time to ready something different as a palette cleanser for the rest of September.

More 3.5

This is the third book in the Series featuring Sara, Jeffery and others. Lena is front and center trying to survive and recover after the events in the previous novel [b:Blindsighted|21718|Blindsighted (Grant County, #1)|Karin Slaughter|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1167323203s/21718.jpg|2590340]. Sara is enjyoying her day and last few weeks of her Sister's pregancy at the local Ice Cream joint when she gets a call to investigate a dead body as coroner. It appears that a college boy has jumped and commited sucide. Sara does the autopsy and feels something is off, but can't put her finger on it. Another body is discovered but is quickly ruled questionable but no evidence to really support a murder. More college students end up dead and she needs to determine quickly is this an epidemic of sucides or something else. The book got muddled and confusing in the middle, but Slaughter manages to pull it together and give it a solid ending. Lena may not be my favorite character, but after learning the trauma she suffered I can better understand her actions. As for the ending, she stretched the motive a little far and I didn't quite feel the motive supported the deaths.

3.5☆

I kinda want someone to spoil this for me and tell me if Sara ends up with that piece of shit Jeffrey. If she does, I don't think I wanna keep reading. He's such an asshole.
