Just re read this in one sitting to take my mind off the horrors. It helped immensely. I take my copy of this from the 40s to college with me every year though it had been probably at least a decade since I’d actually read it. It’s like a ESA just having it near me brings me joy. L Frank Baum said in his foreword that he wrote it to combat the darkness and trauma of classic fairytales and to have a book for kids of just pure joy and it is evident that he accomplishes that goal. Also this is my best smelling book and that feels necessary to say

I loved it! So much of the greatness of the classic film, but with a good dose of extra silliness. It reminded me of the writing style of the Chronicles of Narnia.

My copy has a different illustrator. I'll note him later.
I'm beginning to think that I've not read this one, the original, since I was a wee thing. Because parts of this were completely new to me. At one point I probably just thought, you know this story (the movie version at least) so why read it? And then I'd grab one of the other books in the series.

Dorothy Gale gets whisked off to the land of Oz by an errant tornado, unexpectedly killing the Wicked Witch of the East when her house lands on her. She meets three friends on her travels in her quest to get home: the brainless Scarecrow, the heartless Tin Woodman, and the cowardly Lion. Basically, if you’ve seen the movie, you know the plot…or do you? (Actually, you don’t!) Many basic details stay the same but many additional adventures, explorations, characters, and plot twists exist in the book!

I LOVE the musical Wicked and have for almost 15 years now. I had the opportunity to see it again this past spring and decided it was time to read this series. I read a few back when I first got excited about Wicked in the early 2000s but I know I didn’t finish the whole series. In the series, there are gems of races and characters that never make it to either the movie or the musical(s). Yes, there are three that I know of: The Wizard of Oz the musical, Wicked, and The Wiz – an African American, inner city take on the Wizard of Oz that has some fantastic music. And even if you aren’t obsessed with Wicked like me, this story is a classic that everyone should explore (and as always, the book is better than the movie)! I figured back to school would be the perfect time to pull out some easy reads like this series. I also was excited about exploring fictional races after finishing the Furies of Calderon by Jim Butcher series last week. If you are a teacher, you get it: this time of year is SO exhausting! (10 hours of sleep last night did not fix my exhaustion from week 1!)

There are a few wonderful nuggets in the book that I recognize from the musical which was amusing! I also enjoy that the adventures are way more detailed in the book. Finally, plot twist: the ending is totally different!

I’ll go 9 of 10 for enjoyment and 5 of 5 for readability. If you’ve seen the movie, and especially if you are a fan of Wicked, check it out!
