Simply of the most important books I’ll ever read. It’s hard to get through, at times, but I feel intensely grateful for this monumental synthesis of information.

A quarter star given for the first two chapters. As a social worker, this is one of the least trauma-informed books that I've read. It's misogynistic and completely absent of diversity and recognition of oppressive systems. Derogatory language used to describe clients. Author has a bad reputation in the mental health field. I would highly suggest researching the controversy about him and this book. Also yet another white cis male telling the world that people develop all bad things from theirs mothers *eye roll*

Loved reading this book! Trauma is always spoken in the context of war veterans, but the intricacies are never fully connected. This book well develops the connection. It actually goes further by not separating citizen trauma from war trauma, but speaks of them on the same level. When I began this reading I was skeptical if there would be any new concepts or material. I am happy to say that there was in fact exploration in areas that have not been fed into mainstream media! As a survivor myself, I enjoy that throughout the book there is consistently stories of people being shared. I would like to read a book like this one that takes its central concepts and goes a bit further. Overall, excellent well researched and articulated book!

On page 13 the author defends a r*pist. In the 13 pages I read, I did not see any critical thinking about the source of trauma, solutions to trauma, or the traumatization of society as we know it. The lack of depth and critical thinking from the author, along with the blatant disrespect for survivors of violence, has prevented me from reading this book any further. I do not recommend this book at all.
