For full disclosure purposes, this book was suggested to me by my therapist with the idea that I would learn more information about how to deal with my own trauma. It was really fascinating to read about Dr. van der Kolk's research and the early research done on PTSD. The stories told in here were also really interesting (but sometimes triggering) and it was interesting to see how different schools of therapy were used. A critique I have however is that sometimes, depending the story, Dr. van der Kolk had a bit of a voyeuristic tone to them, which sometimes left me feeling underwhelmed by the narration. And while I did identify with some of the points expressed and learned a lot of generalized information about PTSD, the structure and voice of the novel left much to be desired. Maybe this is a mistake on my part, but the novel sometimes felt very academic to me and while that is okay for me personally, I think some of the jargon might be off putting to those looking to discover help for what they are experiencing.

This book was very interesting and I learned a lot about myself. However, I found it incredibly hard to get through as the content is very dense. It reminded me of my psychology textbooks from when I was in university. I recommended this book to those willing to put in the work and time to read it.

As a neuroscience major and someone fascinated with psychology I found this book extremely interesting. It is, however, very dense and uses a lot of technical jargon. I also had to take it more slowly as I found parts of it difficult to read because of my own trauma. All in all, worth the read. Some of the ideas and lessons offered will stick with me for a long time

Definitely the gold-standard of trauma related texts, it is extremely difficult to get through due to content, but worth it if you aspire to be more trauma-informed.

Oofta. I have very mixed feelings about this read. First off, I wouldn't classify it as a self help book. I do think that it can be a useful read if you work with children in any capacity. I found it fascinating to see that trauma produces actual physiological changes to the body, including recalibration of the brains alarm systems. Considering it is a psychology book, i wish it would have come with content warnings; i truthfully do NOT understand why the author went SO INTO DEPTH on the traumatic background of some of his clients. It made it an extremely slow, long, and hard read for me. I was also really disappointed to see that with all of the talk of childhood trauma, there were no studies or mention of children who go through adoption.

It’s was way too heavy. The book goes into detail about different types of really traumatic experiences different people have had in their lives.
