Ugh.

I was PUMPED to read this one. I know it’s been out for a while but I just found out about it and was so ready to read it.

It was good but not great. I was really hoping for great.

I feel like there was a lot missing from the story and a few things didn’t line up. The ending was good though. Even if involved the mafia? Money laundering? Murder? Police setups? Just so much going on.
adventurous medium-paced

I really liked Lucky as a character... I just don't like thrillers. Why do I keep reading them?

I would actually say that my rating for this book is 3.5 out of 5.

I was looking at my local library site and this book was available and on my to-be-read pile so I decided to check it out.

Synopsis: Lucky is a con woman, it's what she was raised to be by her father. Her whole life Lucky thought that she was the reason that her mother did not stick around and as a result developed a co-dependent relationship with her father who was always chasing the next big score. Except once Lucky could understand what was happening she did not enjoy conning people. Unfortunately, she was not strong enough to believe she could make it on her own and fell in love with a man with ways just like her father. Now that he's left her on the hook for their crimes, will she be strong enough to stand on her own two feet and make a better life for herself?

Thoughts: I really liked Lucky as a character. She was vulnerable and conflicted and her growth throughout the book was fun to watch. I really enjoyed the dual timeline in the book because it really helped me understand her motivations and psychology.

Although there were a few surprises in the plot I was able to guess other plot points very early on in the book and I was not entirely sure if I was supposed to or not. I also was incredibly confused about the back story of the Nun. Why was that relevant to the plot? I understand her desire to help which moved one of the characters central to the plot forward, but when the book ended I found that I was disappointed that we did not get to know more about her story. Clearly, she had done something that she need to a. hide out from and b. needed to atone for so badly that she became a Nun but I was disappointed we never learn what that thing is.

The ending was why I did not rate this book higher. It's not just because I felt unsatisfied about the Nun's storyline, but I sort of felt like we had this great first and second act with Lucky struggling and sustaining losses and gains and the third act sort of petered out. The resolution was nice, but it felt anti-climactic.

If you are looking for a fun and enjoyable read I would recommend giving this a listen.
emotional funny fast-paced

Interesting writing and story. Very quick read. But I was just a little disappointed with the ending. It felt cut short. I feel like a little more wrapping up would have been more satisfying. Like what happened in court and Lucky starting her new life.
