This one was pretty good. Far-fetched at times but I cared about the character

DID NOT FINISH: 60%

Realized I wasn't really invested in what happened to the protagonist, but what sealed the deal was
the first phone conversation with her mother. It was so anti-climactic for all the time she spent going on about wanting to find her mother, and it seemed too straightforward to just give her call after all these years. But then to not even say anything and just walk away from the phone? Felt like a missed opportunity.

Incredible book!! It’s a must read!!

Lucky
By Marissa Stapley

I can understand why this was a
Reece Book Club pick!

Synopsis - Lucky is a con artist, like her father. She’s a product of her upbringing. What if you had the winning lottery ticket that would change your life forever, but couldn’t cash it in? Lucky Armstrong is a tough, talented grifter who has just pulled off a million-dollar heist with her boyfriend Cary. She’s ready to start a brand-new life , with a new identity - when things go sideways.

Review - This was a wonderful, engaging read from start to finish. With it’s original and intriguing premise, I was totally invested in Lucky’s journey and how events would unfold.

At only 234 pages, it was a quick and compelling read. Told in duel timelines, (which I love) from our protagonist Lucky, we get a sense of who she is and more importantly why. My heart broke for her many times over. I loved the glimpses into her childhood and how she felt living with con artist father and with the consequences of that lifestyle.

It’s a well written, plot driven, entertaining and unputdownable book! I adored Lucky, she’s strong, feisty, smart and vulnerable and I found myself championing her the whole way.

Overall, a perfectly paced, clever and satisfying read, one that I highly recommend.
Thank you to my gorgeous buddy reader Nat we had some very interesting and hilarious conversations around certain characters!

Many thanks to the wonderful team at @hachette for this #gifted copy.

Maybe a 3.5. Compelling tale of a grifter and how she came to be through the mistakes, dishonesty, lies, abandonments and manipulations of those who were supposed to take care of her, those who said they loved her. The end feels a bit contrived and just 'too perfect'.

 Reese's Book Club Pick 37/64

"This is a story about a girl named Lucky..." but unlike the timeless Britney Spears classic, I don't see this one being a tale for the ages. This book was boring and predictable - Lucky honestly lived up to her name because in no world do I see things going as well for her as everything did. It was hard to believe or follow the plot - it was as if Stapley had limited paper to print her book on and had to keep it short, so she just made things magically happen without any real thought behind them. The poorly-photoshopped cover should have been an omen.
