I will never look at grocery lists the same way after reading this. Such a fun book! After binge watching The Tinder Swindler and then Inventing Anna back to back I was in the mood for more con-artist plots and this fit the bill perfectly. It's told in dual timelines and each was compelling, plus this book had a lot of heart and makes you think about family—both blood & found family. Also—loved the shout out to Lucia Berlin's short stories + the island of Dominica!
Summary - This story is about a girl named Lucky who isn’t exactly having the best luck. She is on the run from the police with no friends or family for support, unable to cash in a winning lottery ticket that would solve all of her problems, and juggling with trying to find the truth about her past whilst questioning her morality. This book raises questions on what exactly makes a good person ‘good’, and how much of our true core self is decided by nature or nurture.
Review - This story has a really strong premise. It is original and raises a lot of good questions that we can sit and debate on for hours. Unfortunately this book didn’t land for me. I didn’t find any of the characters relatable or likeable (including our MC Lucky). I found the ending of the story entirely too coincidental and convenient, it was as though the author wrapped up an entire book worth of storyline in the last two chapters just to get it finished on time. If you want a quick, easy and light read to get you out of your reading funk, this may be the book for you!

Definitely one of my new favorite books! This book shows Lucky’s, the main character, point of view in present day as well as when she was ten years old. You can see how the choices she made at ten years old led her to be who she is today and how her con-artist father played a major role. I easily felt connected to all the characters as they were developed in such an amazing way. It was beautifully written with just the right amount of plot twists. I can honestly say this is one of the best books i’ve ever read and one of the very few i’ve full on sobbed at. Please, please read this book.
P.S.
this is my first review ever so go easy on me.

Story of a baby left on the steps of a church who was then taken by a con artist who raised her, Lucky, to the life of cons and making money and running. But Lucky wants answers. We go back between now and before and the story of Lucky is slowly told.
Iba siendo un libro de 4 hasta las ultimas 20 páginas. Se resuelve tan rapidamente que no alcanza a atar la trama como todo el resto. Esas 20 paginas finales hacen que le de un 2
I thought this book was mostly slow and boring.
I don’t think the protagonist “Lucky” ever truly grew or learned anything throughout the book. None of the characters were deeply developed and many of the story lines I found completely unnecessary. I also think that the story wrapped up into a perfect bow, which I don’t enjoy when it seems forced and is unrealistic.
There were a few interesting twists at the end but I guessed both of them. I always feel guilty rating books this low but honestly this book just wasn’t for me.

This was a fast-paced, compelling heist novel. It’s also a coming-of-age story in a way, and I liked how Stapley wove those two elements together. I definitely would recommend this one for a vacation or the beach!
Quick and fun read. Read in one day.
(My library labeled this as a mystery..it is definitely not a mystery!)
