Sophie Gonzales has done it again! Never Ever Getting Back Together is the queer YA reality dating show novel of my dreams! Have you ever found yourself watching the Bachelor and thinking…. “Not enough queer people here” or “whats going on behind the scenes” or even “imagine they’re all trying to date the same Ex! Ha!!”. Well that last one is the basic outline of the books plot! Main Characters Maya and Skye both agree to join the new Reality Dating show to date their mildly famous/royal adjacent common ex, Jordy Miller. Jordy, no good lyin cheater, actually cheated on Maya with Skye, and then arranges to have them bunk together in the same room for the show. Yikes!!

What I will say is that I LOVED the concept, and the couple that makes it out of Second-Chance Romance, and was rooting for them to win all along. No spoilers 😉

The story is cute, something to read when you want to relax or get out of a book slump

I've been looking forward to this book since it came out, so glad I finally got the chance to read it! Cute, great bisexual representation, with a whole heap of the forced proximity and enemies to lovers tropes. One of my favourite reads of 2023 so far.

I really liked this and read it in an evening (accidentally lol). Do I like dating shows?? Am I a reality TV person? Idk, maybe if they're gay XD

This book was a bit slow for my liking, and it was easy to tell what was going to happen. I wish there was more suspense, but I am not the one who wrote the book.

I really enjoyed this book! I think the second half was stronger than the first. The romance here, though quick, feels natural and unforced. I really bought their connection and their miscommunications felt realistic and not red flag-y (especially since the reality TV environment lends some plausibility to miscommunication in general). The one hangup I had with this book was the idea that someone 20 years old had enough viable exes to populate a full set of 6 on a dating show- I think the premise would have worked better if the author had aged the cast up 3-6 years, which also would have raised the stakes. With that being said, once you suspend your disbelief, this is a lot of fun. Act 3 packed a lot more punch emotionally than I anticipated, and brought this up to a 4 from a 3.5 for me.
