Took me a while to get into this one but it was worth sticking with it. Unusual.

This, more than the other book I recently read, really conjures up Duchovny's "character" of himself in "The Chair" [now on Netflix]... I did enjoy that it made New York seem like a "real place" that normal people (non-rich teachers) actually live, as in the days of wholesome Miss Subways of Old, and I quite liked Emer herself. The ethnic magical realist stuff, and Conn himself, were grating; I really felt like Conn was going to be the guy Emer learned to live without, but I was wrong.

I like the strange main conceit of the story - that even if someone is magically removed from your life, there are some connections stronger than that. Though to me Con wasn't as strong a character as he should have felt for how Emer felt. I like the way the author writes, it is very interesting. The main climax was slightly confusing with the subway parts but overall I really enjoyed the book.

Wow, this was a pleasant surprise! I picked it off the new books shelf at the library out of pure curiosity of Duchovny's work. For me, it was like a little bit of American Gods, a little bit of X-Files, and a lot of pop-culture reference and jab at politics fun. What surprised me was how well it flowed, despite it's supernatural weirdness. Light-hearted, but not over-the-top cornball. It even made me look up several things online, continuing to peak my curiosity. Thanks, Duchovny, for the wonderful surprise and fun! I'll be checking out Holy Cow next.

I liked this book, but there was a lot going on here. At first, it felt like a copy of American Gods, but it came into its own rather quickly. His references to literature and pop culture are abundant, and I feel like I should have done some research into some of the myths/Gods discussed. Overall, the writing style is great, and I loved how it had an X Files vibes to it.

Brings up themes similar to American Gods... but not as well.

This book was… confusing. I was hoping it would be about the actual contest of Miss Subways but it was not. Then in the description it said it was about mythology. I’d never heard of any of the myths or the people in the myths so it was an odd journey. If I had known more about the mythology behind the story, I probably would’ve enjoyed it more. However, the story was written in an interesting albeit confusing fashion. I loved all the different chapter titles and finding them mentioned in the chapter. I don’t really know how I feel about this book but it was just meh.
