Eh

What a load of rubbish, I’ve seen so many people saying this is the scariest book they’ve ever read and now I have a personal vendetta against every single one of them

The writing was so bad and the characters so unrealistic I wanted them all to die…. Should have stayed on Reddit

This book does spooky, campfire scares remarkably well. Some of the creepiest set pieces I’ve read. He can even make a parrot spooky.

But as a novel, this seems to get bogged down and run in circles, and it could have been cut by about a third.

And despite an afterward that explicitly discussed the presentation of Native people in fiction by white peoples, the presentations of Native characters seem remarkably one dimensional, all of them there to aid the protagonist in his quest, provide spiritual guidance, and then die grizzly deaths.

Still, an effective ghost story.
