I had high hopes for this, but was disappointed majorly.

First off, all the native characters are written in a way that feels like a hollow caricature. Like they were only included as a plot point. With that being so, they were the best characters in the entire story. And of course, they are hardly in it and killed off.

Secondly, the main two characters are whiny and incompetent. Perhaps the real horror.

Lastly, it was hardly scary at all. All the “good scares” were mainly repeats of each other.

I nearly didn’t finish.

There are strong opinions about this book. I found it absolutely terrifying as someone who talks and occasionally walks in their sleep. The pervasiveness of the entity in question was nightmare inducing. There is a point where I wonder what more could possibly happen, and we were at the 70% mark. There’s conversations about portrayal of Native peoples in the story that I’m not sure achieved what the author was trying to.
