Okay, there's an issue. Initially, I gave this book a lot of credit, which I will now reduce. I've concluded that this is a problem for me and many other members of my community after conducting my research and considering his inclusion of indigenous people. Even if I don't know the author personally, I don't completely agree with how he uses us to add exoticism and mystique to his story. When a white man begins to include us in his tales because he had an Indigenous acquaintance in school, does that suddenly make it acceptable when there are so many under-represented Indigenous authors? It's a challenging topic, and many would undoubtedly label this "high sensitivity" on our part, but that's okay. The topic is quite complex, and there are differing views among our people. But this is how I and a lot of people in my community feel, so I figured I'd just give an honest take on it. The narrative about Felix and Faye was excellent, and I don't want to disparage it since it was a beautiful illustration of the lengths a person would go to for the one they love.
I enjoyed this, despite the repetition that dulls the fangs of the antagonist in this story. I almost really wanted to give this three stars, like a solid three... But jumping Jesus on a jalapeƱo, the sheer repetition of the story walking back and forth over the same stomping ground really had me desensitized about halfway through.
Which is unfortunate because it is genuinely a good story. The writing and characters are good. Solid even. The spooky is real guys. But you can only get the same creeping dread rewritten so many times before you're just like "Yeah yeah, come on now... Let's move this along a bit."
Its a solid two stars for me, I struggled with actually giving it three stars because it's genuinely a good story, the heebie jeebies in Stolen Tongues is like a wicked sharp knife, but it's waved about so repetitively that it loses its threatening aura about halfway in.
Worth the read! But it's impact feels more like an over milked cow than a piercing wound.
