Stolen Tongues

I am a challenge to effectively scare with a story. My world being storytelling and one of my favorite genres being horror, I can't really look beyond the "scariness" of a book other than in terms of audience appeal and storytelling elements.

This novel got me. Several times. Even when over-explained by the end of the story, the creature is horrifying, disgusting, complex, and way too powerful. The real struggle that these characters face in defying this creature makes their bid for survival all the more tangible and realistic. The characters are all complex and interesting, offering more up than just catalysts for scares and thrills and screams. The author's depiction of his fictional Native American culture is respectful, well-thought out, not cliched, and very informed. A lot of love went into that representation, though the final product is fictional (which is still not great, in my opinion, but I love that the author involved so many voices in helping him render this culture he created).

This is a creepy novel through and through, and I am so glad I impulsively bought it and read it.

There was some continuity issues with the story, and certain moments that seemed exceptionally important to the story just died away without any further involvement in the plot. That got a little frustrating but overall gruesomely awesome description of an oogieboogie, genuinely gave me shivers and made me feel uncomfortable in the dark.

genuinely super scary— I finished it in just over a day because i couldn’t put it down. Lost me a little at the end, but I don’t think at fault of the book’s— just my own taste for horror stories.

Super creepy concept, but just meh for me. I think I would have liked it even less if I had read the physical copy versus listening to the audiobook. The narrator for the audiobook was amazing. I loved the start of the book with the flashback of his friend’s parrot. But it felt like a basic plot with a lot of creepy atmosphere.

I kept seeing this book pop up in my psychological thriller and horror groups I’m in as one of the scariest books they’ve read, kept them up at night, yadda yadda. While I agree it was creepy at times, did we read the same book??

Also, can we talk about how incredibly horrible the ending was? I mean, I was pretty pulled into it through the middle of the book (the ONLY reason I gave 2 stars), but the ending just killed it all for me and actually had my cussing this book out to my husband.

I really don’t know how I feel about this one? I’m struggling to collect my thoughts. I found the first 1/3 of the book very creepy, atmospheric and actually had me struggling to sleep! But then it got very very repetitive…. VERY repetitive BUT I still found it relatively enjoyable? URGH I DONT KNOW!
