Opened Pandora’s box starting this series, and I’m thrilled. This first installment was GOOD and feels underrated and slept on?? Such unique magic systems that at first felt disorganized, however came together quite well at the end with some heavy plot twists. It’s giving The Fifth Season + kandra (from Mistborn)-like creatures + Westworld "kill the gods" philosophy + Pirates of the Caribbean setting? But truly doesn't compare to anything else I've ever read.

Update: after sitting on it and reading book 2, I do feel like the writing/dialogue is too rudimentary for me, it feels very clunky. I still love the concept and magic system!

DNF @35%.

No reason to go on, while plenty to stop.

Weird choice wih 4 povs, but 2 written in the first person, and 2 in the third.

Characters, while not quite stereotypical, are still pretty much "déjà vu", with no real psychological depth. For example, something quite impactful happens early in the book... But the characters don't really react to it... They just "shrug it off"... If they don't care about it, why should I? Why should I care about any of it ?

World building is very lackluster, and the small bit we've got don't make much sense... I mean, a boy with no blood ties to the throne is on the list as possible heir ? Makes zero sense whatsoever...

And to that a plot with zero tension and a clear lack of physical descriptions, and this is enough for me to DNF...

i really enjoyed this book! i found the first half slow but zoomed through the second. lots of exposition that got a little slow in the beginning but the worldbuilding was great and the second half of the book was very good. excited to read the next one!
