I definitely didn't anticipate sinking so deeply into this book! I was hesitant to jump into a book about a group of "wily teens" in a gang pulling a fast one on a group of adults... but this was so much more than that! Six of Crows and its characters have so much depth!! These are the most interesting, unique and well-developed teenage characters that I've encountered in a long time. They are more mature than most of the adult characters in books I've been reading lately. I was completely surprised in the best way.

The world-building is complex and intricate. I haven't read any of Leigh Bardugo's related books, so it was an entirely new world for me and I had to read the beginning slowly to understand and absorb everything. The environment is harsh and cruel, both socially and politically, and the six main characters we follow have heartbreaking backstories where they have had to move through challenges and traumas at young ages just to survive. They behave in ways that are fierce, cunning and ruthless most of the time, though as the book moves through each of their different perspectives, the reader is able to experience each character's unique vulnerability, softness, and humility. The female representation in this book is incredible! Nina and Inej are strong, multi-layered, independent and uniquely skillful, just like their male counterparts. They are not damsels in distress and they are not so overwhelmed by romance that they cannot function. I loved these characters so damn much and I wouldn't change a thing about them!

The plot is very character-driven, and despite three separate romantic relationships building, the romance is subtle and not the focus. For me personally this was a refreshing change from my current reading taste. The growing relationships and intimacy between the characters felt believable and I just couldn't help but fall in love with all of them so hard.

This book is masterfully crafted. I am not surprised by the hype and praise. You can tell it is written with such dedication to the world and characters, but also to perfect prose that sometimes reads like poetry. I will absolutely be reading A Crooked Kingdom!

I loved this book! It’s somewhere around 500pgs long and I devoured it in like 2 days! I wish I had read this as a teen it might have become my whole personality haha.

I love a good heist, and that’s totally what this was! The planning, the multiple POVs, the betrayals and opposing goals, the perfect crew!

I loved the setting, kind of a Victorian-era crime-filled Amsterdam-like city?

And I loved the characters - I was so into every POV!

Inej and Nina are the best, I wish Jesper had been given more time, and Kaz is Kaz (he gets better over the course of the book).

Matthias starts out as the worst and also improves, though I do tend to wish that these types of characters (bigoted, blinded by hate, etc) get humbled a bit more before coming around to reason, and instead it kinda just… happened?

Most of the romances in this book except for Matthias and Nina, all felt kind of suddenly presented. I think the development of all of the romances were probably the worst written/planned part of the book, but since this is solidly YA that thankfully wasn’t the main aspect of the story.

This is definitely YA, and sometimes I found myself wishing it was NA, and that the characters were somewhat older (as they seemed to be written that way imo), but that didn’t retract anything from the experience.

I would also add that my one regret besides the romance development was the character development. We definitely got some, but since the heist was so fast paced, it felt like the character development was equally fast paced (except for Inej), and we were presented with conclusions without ever really seeing the work/turning points behind them. I would have loved more time to explore each character’s inner struggles before they changed.

Also, the ending! A cliffhanger! I need to read the next book ASAP!

Ok. I'm speechless. Dumb-founded. Incredulous. Amazed and..just... in awe. It's been a while since I've felt this kind of excitement. I breezed through this adventure of a book and before I knew it, it's over. I just can't explain how amazed I was. All I could remember was how I whispered "holy sh*t this is so good" after every single chapter. I dislike how fast I read through this, and trust me, I did my best in delaying the gratification. I did not want it to end. LOL. Ok, on to the next!!

This is the gold-standard of YA fantasy.
