I really did love most of this book, it is largely driven by a mismatched cast of characters doing their best to survive in the horrifying world they exist in, dealing with strange gods with a heavy emphasis on their being no easy awnsers or quick solutions, and that most things come with a price.

I absolutely fell in love with the characters, I worried when they were in danger and was genuinely invested in them and their journeys.

The plot was a little jumbled and the pace varied, I still thoroughly enjoyed the book but I do think the plot itself was the weakest part as the character writing and world building were immaculate.

Highly recommend it, it's quite long and quite a heavy read but definitely worth it.

This pulled together at the end. One chapter seemed off, more like a draft. "Old boy"?

Exceptional, I think I enjoyed this even more than the first book, The City of Last Chances. Has a very British, Pratchett-esque feel to the arch humour but more serious than a Pratchett novel. Fantasy M*A*S*H with a fantastic cast and some great set pieces. Some reviewers complain about the sedate pace but I never felt it dragged at any stage. 5 stars.

I really liked this book. It’s better than previous one because the story felt a little more cohesive and I liked all of the characters. There are still some parts of the story that aren’t fully explained which I sometimes find annoying but it wasn’t too distracting. Or maybe I’m just getting used to that style of storytelling.
