2.5*. In my opinion, this is one of the better ones in the series but unfortunately the second half felt like it fell back into the same old formula of fights, handy coincidences and a lot of peripheral noise. When it concentrated on the romance and the relationship between the main couple, which was mature with none of the usual frustrating push pull between them, it held my attention.
Surprised me
I'd never heard of this book before, but I really enjoyed it. The character building is excellent and the main characters are so endearing. There were some pretty hefty triggers in this book (pedophilia, child abuse) that made it a harder read for me,but luckily it never got too in depth and was more alluded to. There wasn't a lot of sense with the hierchy of wolves or governing body, but I didn't feel that detracted from the story. It was a fast paced read that had me laughing, smiling, and on the edge.

I really, really, REALLY enjoyed this instalment of The Phoenix Pack series!
In previous books Ryan mostly grunts, we know very little to nothing about him or why he doesn’t communicate with people socially so I was worried how she was going to write him as a main character but I’m glad to say I loved diving deeper into Ryan and his past.
I appreciated that Ryan knew pretty much instantly that he was True Mates with McKenna as this was one of my issues surrounding the previous books that they all seemed to only figure out they are true mates after claiming each other or after people mention the possibility but not with Ryan and I think this is because he is very typically shown as being someone who is factual and sees things in a very logical way so when he sees the typical signs (that we have seen in previous books between the main characters). This is such a nice refreshing change from having to point it out to the main characters.
McKenna on the other hand doesn’t want to feel the mate bond but she thinks it’s imprinting and she is worried Ryan won’t want to do this because of his terrible upbringing and his parents not being true mates (this is the closest we have seen into an imprinting relationship but obviously it’s not the main characters). It was nice to be able to see a different side to the loner lifestyle because twice we have seen loner wolves being a killer for hire or turning rogue so this was nice to see how hard loner life can be.
We are introduced to some other shifter species too and they are all currently at the Phoenix Pack house (or have sadly died!) making for a nice way to continue the story and introduce us to new shifters. Also interesting is the addition of Darren’s mate Ally, we don’t know how they met etc but I believe this is a book in a series that has been written for the Mercury Pack so while I’m not as enthusiastic about that pack I can’t wait to see Darren’s story as I liked him in carnal secrets (it was about the only thing I liked).
All in all I absolutely loved learning about Ryan and why he is the way he is as this has kept me wondering throughout all the books. I love there are more kids in the pack too so maybe we can see more of how kye interacts with children as he is always around the adults.
The sex scenes are great once again and Ryan is quite chatty in the bedroom (it’s always the quiet ones you have to watch out for haha). Hopefully the next book will be just as good.
Few points I didn’t like, again are mainly based on the writing style and choices made, I don’t like how they author constantly reminds us why or how couples got together but I can see why she does it if you’re reading it as a stand alone book but because it’s a series I don’t know why she feels the need to do this. Again personal preference for me so I can’t really knock a star off for my person opinion on a writing style

I loved this book, I love the dynamic between McKenna and Ryan. I also love that Ryan just linear figures out about her being his mate and just accepts it rather than all the other couples so far.
Savage Urges is the fifth book in the "Phoenix Pack" series.
Markenna is a lone wolf. She tries to find a safe pack for the lone wolves that come into the shelter she volunteers in. When she tries to help Zeke, one of her teen lone wolves, to reconnect with a distant family member, she didn't expect that she would find herself attracted to Ryan. Ryan and his pack are eager to accept zeke into their home. But soon after meeting Markenna, Ryan knows she is his, now he just needs to convince Markenna of that.
I loved this one so damm much. It's for sure one of my favorites so far!
I always have a soft spot for the quiet, brooding, dark characters and Ryan is no exception. I loved being in his head and getting to know him more. Markenna is also a good character. I really enjoyed seeing the lone wolf aspect of the story. They fitted so well together and everytime she made Ryan talk or grunt had me squealing. Ryan had me swooning so much and I just love him so much. The story was really good. I enjoyed the shelter and the story line surrounding it. It was a nice balance between the plot and the romance.
I really liked seeing Zeke and Ryan bond and the pack was so open and nice and I just love them all. What they did for the shelter, how they opened up to Makenna after seeing her with Ryan, the ending of what they did for those kids, just everything made my heart warm. The fight at the end was pretty good, it took some turns I didn't expect and it also made my heart hurt. But the ending was cute and satisfying and i can't wait to see glimpses of them in the other books. Ugh, I wish this one was longer because i would have loved more of these two.
Anyway, I loved this. If it wasn't clear, I'm simping hard for Ryan and Mekanna. I have a good feeling about Teo and Riley. They would have some fun drama.
Rating: 4,5 stars (Maybe 5 star)

If you’ve read the other books in this series, you know the formula, but Savage Urges managed to feel really fresh to me.
I loved how Ryan (stoic and not big on emotions) figured out early that Makenna was his mate, and how he was so quietly determined and steadfast when trying to convince her. And Makenna had good reason to be reluctant to believe that they were mates, which was very tied up in her past as a lone wolf. They were actually a very solid couple for a lot the book.
The enemy of the book plotline was also really well done (although kind of disturbing, TW for references to CSA, not involving the main couple). The lead up to the final battle actually got so intense that I switched from audiobook to ebook so I could read it more quickly.

One thing I've always admired about Suzanne's stories is that her female heroines are strong and independent. They aren't the 'save me' types, instead often saving the men in dangerous situations. Makenna is both quirky and strong-headed; she will not back down from a verbal spar, but she's also smart and scrappy. Exactly the things that Ryan never thought he'd find attractive in a female. He's emotionally distant, a bit numb, and a man of very few words, but something about her speaks deeply to both him and his wolf. Makenna being a lone shifter does complicate things, as they aren't seen as 'good people', often thought of as hired killers or possibly feral. But she's taken her situation and made life better for those that are also loners, in helping them find safe places to land and new homes. When that shelter becomes threatened, both Makenna and Ryan will fight together to save it, thus forcing them to become closer than they ever wanted.
I have found that I go to Suzanne's books when I want a good shifter story. They are always written well and have a palpable connection between the characters, that focuses on plot rather than just the sexiness between two animalistic people (though, there is that too). I loved both characters and how they really did fill the holes that each were missing within, but never perfectly because that's real life. The suspense was gradual which helped to keep the characters close together (even if they didn't necessarily like it all the time), and it led to a nice addition to the romance. I know some don't enjoy the alternating POVs from paragraph to paragraph, but I've found that for Suzanne, I'll get over it because I love her stories. Another great addition to the Phoenix Pack series, and I am always anxious for more.
