Touching, clever, complicated. Everything I want a book to be.

I love historical fiction and Sepetys does a wonderful job of fleshing our fictional characters with lesser known, but significant historical events surrounding them. Her books inspire me to do research about history and also care about the multiple characters.
I will say that I felt like the ending felt rushed. 18 years is a long time to just jump back into something.

Absolutely amazing. I learned so much about Franco and Spain. It is sad, happy, hopeful, and powerful. Ruta Sepetys has long been one of my favorite authors for her thoroughly researched historical fiction, but I literally could not put this book down. Excellent reading and a great book for class reading or book club. The inclusion of primary resource materials from presidents, journalists, and oral histories from those who lived through the dictatorship only served to strengthen the story. If you like history, learning, and just reading a great book from a great writer, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

Even better the second time. I cannot believe how much one fiction book has taught me and led me to do my own research on Franco and Spain.

4.5⭐

I enjoyed the first part of this book much better than the 2nd. I don't think the author did a good job accounting for all of the years between the two parts. The 2nd part was much less believable than the first as well. I think the events and time period were well researched, though.

I love everything Ruta Sepetys! She not only writes a beautiful story but opens the reader’s eyes to history you have never heard! This is just another example of that!
