I really enjoyed this book. I love Ruth Sepetys writing. This historical novel was set in Franco's Spain and involves a romance between a beautiful Spanish girl and a rich American would be photographer. The ending is a little neat however the historical detail in the book is well done. The influence of the Catholic church, the poverty, selling and stealing babies and bull fighting is all covered. Like all good historical fiction the book has left me curious to research more on the history of Spain during Franco's reign.

This was a slow burn for me. I was not engaged on the first or second try. The only reason I kept reading (listening) was because it’s for book club. I’m glad I stuck with it. I am surprised and disheartened by how little I know/knew about Franco Spain. Ultimately a fascinating story.
Ruta Sepetys has yet to disappoint with her novels. I went into this one only knowing it was about Spain, but I fell in love with her transportive writing and storytelling. Daniel and Ana's stories are seamlessly tied together in 1 month in Spain that carries a life time. The historical aspects of Spain were heartbreaking, but so interesting to learn about. I could not put this book down and it has made me curious to read other books about this topic. I loved this book even though it was hard to read about at times. I highly recommend this historical fiction novel and this author in general.
