It wasn’t a fast paced read but I felt like it really made me think. People, particularly self centered people, who can’t process and cope with personal trauma justify an evil act without thinking of the consequences. How does that then affect everyone, even themselves? It really dove into just how traumatic something can be to one person but how that then spiderwebs into affecting many others. One of my favorite parts of reading is getting to experienced something you never have, even painful things, and the author did a great job of putting me into the shoes of several different people who lost a child. I feel as though I’m coming away from reading this with a different perspective on that pain than I had before I read it. Sometimes I see people asking for books like The Thorn Birds and I can see how this had a little bit of that same family dynamic if you take out the priest part. It’s been years since I’ve read The Deep End of the Ocean but this makes me want to give it another read.

There were passages I read over and over again. This is a story that takes decades to tell, and there was a constant push-pull for me: both to getting it to the conclusion I knew must be coming and to slow it down so that the story would continue. I was desperate to know how it ends but at the same time, the story was so good that I never wanted it to end. I would love to see a sequel come out of this.

Solid debut. The first third of the book I enjoyed bc it gave me a look into the book's title and how its tied in with Indigenous family and community. Thes  details made me want more. But then it transitions to the plot, and I was able to foreshadow easily what had happened and what would happen next, so me thinking that was intentional, I instead looked forward to the character development but I only  enjoyed that growth with Joe. I enjoyed Joe's perspective (the brother). But Norma's POV I found myself pushing thru. I saw qualities btw to cultures, families and upbringings, which I respected and appreciated but I wish I got more POV's. I woulda loved to read on Mae, Ben, the Mom and Dad, and even Charlie. That woulda given me the depth I crave in character driven stories. But, I look forward to what this author has in store for us in the future.

i think the pacing in this is a bit off, but this is a really good book overall.
