This is why I became a librarian. Not because of this book, but because I get to do the things he recommends in this book.

This book offers plenty of ideas for how to combat aliteracy. It’s the perfect book study book to use with our Lemme Reader Profiles grant funded by the ICCSD Foundation which focuses on targeting students’ interests and motivation to read.

A non- school librarian who advocates for classroom teacher-school librarian collaboration!

Well, there is a lot of very cheesey writing in this book, but I wrote down 17 concrete ideas for motivating students to read in my classroom. Readicide makes the case for more meaningful reading in school, while this book gives some concrete ways to accomplish this. If you already believe in authentic classroom reading, skip Readicide and read this instead.

Totally inspirational. Since starting this book I've used so many of the ideas (someday reading list, reading inventory, "I thought of you") and I definitely have spent a lot of time thinking about how to get kids fired up about reading. There are definitely some ideas here that are far more applicable to teachers than librarians, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone who works with kids.

Really appreciated how much Layne embedded real practices that I could take notes on in order to improve my own practice. I will be tweaking how I do independent reading next year because of this!

I don't know if a professional book has ever made me laugh out loud before, but this one did, several times. Some of his "from the trenches" stories are so funny I suspect he may be employing poetic license, but hey, just because something is made up doesn't mean it's not true. The "my reading mentor" stories from prominent children's authors are a nice touch. They might not add to the reader's theory or practice, but they serve as a reminder of how important our work is. The bulk of the book is both passionate and practical. As always, it helps immensely that I agree with most of his basic tenets.

This is a great book for both veteran and novice teachers. It gave me several ideas to try this fall, and lots to share with my colleagues. Overall a good read.

There were some great quotes, some good activities, but a lot of fluff in a short book...Layne obviously has a great passion to find ways to light that fire for his students.
I will add a couple of ideas from his toolbox, and will use several of those quotes in my own work. Glad I read it, just wanted more. Honestly, this book almost convinced me I could write one just as good...
