“. . . but sometimes in life, timing is what matters.”
Story kept me engaged. About an event and time I did not know much about (turn of the LAST century San Francisco and the devastating 1906 earthquake). Also, characters with lives I did not know much about. A botanist, an opera singer, a first generation of American-born Chinese, and a free-spirited artist who knows each of them. All have their own types of adversity to overcome, and are strong women in their own right. I enjoyed how the story weaved for the four of them to come together. So pretty much everything you'd like in a good historical fiction novel.

I’m a simple girl. Kate Quinn writes a book, and I read it!
I was captivated through the first half of this book. I knew there was something I wasn't quite seeing. The second half of the book dragged a little, hence 4 stars instead of 5. I was still entertained. I have read many of Kate Quinn's books, and this made me interested in reading more of Janie Chang.
I highly recommend this book

This book is like if Bridgerton had a love child with a historical mystery and then sent it to San Francisco in 1906. The villain was a little moustache-twirly for my taste but that's ok. Kate Quinn and Janie Chang did a great job weaving together two fascinating characters. Their stories weave together in a slow burn that builds to a literal earthquake of a climax (yes, that one). The pacing meanders a bit in the middle, but the payoff is worth it.
