I definitely learned so much about magic and the circus world from this book. It was an interesting aspect I had never read about before. Because the perp is trained in the art of illusion, he is impossible to catch and it made it so much more exciting to read about.

Very fun read - an illusionist murders seemingly random people. Rhyme and Sachs race to find the culprit before his final act.

My first Lincoln Rhyme. I think.

Incredible. Unbelievable. Fabulous. Ridiculous.

OK, blockbusters should have characters larger than life, able to do impossible things, plots that are extraordinary, but this just went far too far. Twists on twists on twists.

How is the reader supposed to believe a quarter of all this? Bodies pile up over a day and a half, the cops are racing around doing more cop stuff than any cop would do in a year, the mastermind solves it all from his automated wheelchair, and the magician has prepared more tricks and costumes than you'd see in a season of David Copperfield. Un-be-liev-able.

But the story was well-written and exciting enough. I found it hard to put down and read it far too quickly. I've got some more Deavers on Mount Toberead - let's hope that they are better than this one. And please - no more serial murderers!

This book, will be extremely hard to put down, for anyone who starts reading this. Deaver is a master of, someone in this book will say, "misdirection".

I loved the first half of the book and the last part. However, there is a scene that was just completely unbelievable to me. When the suspect escapes from capture, he does so by pretending to be dead. There isn't a police station in this country that wouldn't check for a pulse of a prisoner down. It was totally ridiculous that they would just accept that he was dead, seal the hall, and wait for Sachs to come run the scene. It would never happen. So even though I enjoyed the book before and after this chapter, it just left a bad taste in my mouth. I will read the next book in the series, but I hope it doesn't have completely unbelievable incidents like this one.
