hopeful inspiring fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character

Better for older kids. The abstract nature of the story is lost on very young readers. Illustrations are, as usual, excellent.

Beautiful pictures and message.

a children's book from my childhood i decided to pick up, mostly to complete my reading goal for the year. i had complained to my mom that i was afraid i wasn't going to reach it, and she told me to read something quick and easy. i felt like that was cheating, and i might continue to believe that, but at least i will have actually read all of the books and children's books are not all that bad to go back to once you're an adult. this one was heartwarming with a simple message, and it made me tear up at the end. all that matters is what's happening now, and sometimes all you can do is the simple things. there's nothing bad about that. i might continue to feel like i haven't actually met my goal, but at least my mom will genuinely think i did, and really having one person believe in me is all i need.

Beautiful water colors and a pertinent lesson especially for today's youth who are often distracted by technology and not engaged with the people around them.

Kind of an impulse buy, a kid's book with glorious illustrations and a super sweet story, ostensibly based on a Tolstoy story. I've already had the chance to read it to an enthralled baby.

High brow but not too high-brow. A bit of philosophy wrapped in a children's story, all with pretty amazing watercolors. Not exactly a fable or a morality play, it is both simple and complex. It looks a bit wordy but reads quickly. Works on many levels.

Based on a short story by Leo Tolstoy this book strives to answer three important questions.

1. When is the best time to do things?
2. Who is the most important one?
3. What is the right thing to do?

Nikolai asks his animals friends and receives various answers. It is only through visiting the wise old turtle, Leo that he receives his answers.

The only important time is now. The most important one is the one you are with. The most important thing is to do good to those around you.

4.25 stars. Loved the watercolor. Still chewing on the themes

Wonderful book. The story and the illustrations. My son and I often revisit the story idea.
