This actually had a much lower "rein of terror and death" count than I expected, (oh yeah this is middle grade), but it was still unfun to deal with the last half of the book, when everything went off the rails. I did appreciate how the book made the explicit point that it wasn't using magic that turns a person evil, it's that person's choices.

BUT they also stopped the main villain when he had just decided to become king, when he's theoretically not all evil so I am reaaaaaally curious to see if he'll be redeemed in the next series?

Also I want to go to Nightwing school.

I should have marked it a 5 star rating, but felt the last section was a little rushed compared to the other sections of the book. The precedence was established as expected, but for some reason once Foeslayer vanished everything started happening quickly even and the timespan was not clear (at least to me).

Overall plot has been very clever as to how Darkstalker was saved even before his soul got corrupted completely. Everything was avoided. Would like to see how he behaves when we wakes up after 1000 years. Maybe his soul will be in tact :) I wish it is. But poor Clearsight, wish we knew what happened to her.

This was amazing.

I love that we get several POVs - and that they come together by the end of the book. I loved each and every character and was invested in each and every POV equally. My favourite characters were probably Clearsight and Fathom though.

And I also loved that despite being for children/teens this book didn't shy away from heavy topics and gore and violence. There are several dark scenes in this book where there are descriptions of blood and disembowlment - I didn't expect Arctic's death to be that graphic.

I haven't read the other books where Darkstalker comes back yet, but I honestly can't wait to get to them because I loved him as a vilain and I can't wait to read more from him.

Its a lot better then you would expect for a children’s book. It is strongly focused on the characters and their powers, although technically OP, don’t feel cheap, last minute or even OP because of the character’s flaws. This book kept me intrigued enough for me to finish it in 4 days, when it would normally take me a two weeks.

I didn't love this as much as the original Wings of Fire series, but it was interesting to learn the backstory of Darkstalker. I am glad that I read it after Escaping Peril, because it provided necessary information. It's a good filler while waiting for the next in the Wings of Fire series.
