I started reading this book just to appease my little brother, but I ended up thoroughly enjoying myself. The characters were entertaining, and in general I love a good villain origin story. I liked that the book started off with a good pace and got into the plot without wasting much time, but it did lag a bit in the middle. The dynamics between the characters could have been worked on a bit more, and Darkstalker’s turn was not entirely graceful. There were also moments, like D’s mother’s death, when we were left a bit in the dark—learning about what exactly happened to his mother and what went wrong with his father could have made the middle bit more engaging. However, I greatly enjoyed this story overall, and the different timelines made the book very entertaining to speculate and predict throughout; I was constantly putting the book down to run to my brother and tell him my new theory. I’m happy that I finally gave into my brother’s wishes, and maybe I’ll give some of the other books a shot. Overall, a very good middle grade novel and a compelling villain story.
I loved getting to see Darkstalker’s origin story. Each of the characters introduced here were amazing. It was great finally getting to meet Clearsight and she was a great character. Whiteout was another fantastic character that I wished we got to know more about.
The themes in this novel were very well written. There was a major focus on differences in how events are perceived, how the future can be shaped by choices, and if one can avoid the bad in the future. It was a rather tragic story about the fates of the dragons involved in this story and how Darkstalker came to be a villain. I was surprised at how well written this book was and loved getting to see how all of these characters developed. It was great look into the Darkstalker’s past.

Good effort to provide backstory but when the main books in the series already told you the major plot points, the suspense is lost and it becomes more of a long character sketch

First of all, I love Clearsight, second of all I don't like Darkstalker, at all really, yes he has cause for me to be sympathetic but honestly I am not the sort of person who can excuse all the bad things he's done just because of his past/the fact that he was so powerful he had to become evil. The moment I knew I could never really like his character was when he was in his egg and thinking about his sister and how she can't hatch at the same time as him because of future stuff and mainly because he wanted Foeslayers love all for himself, then right after that when he immediately decided to hate Arctic destroying any possible relationship with him. I read this after Winter Turning so I knew how this was going to play out I just wasn't quite ready for how emotionally invested I would be with some of the characters. I really loved Fathom and Indigo almost immediately, I may be a little biased as the Seawings are my favourite tribe along with Nightwings (I'm a scholar at heart). I used to be a huge fan (low-key still am) of Icewings but then I read Winter Turning and decided that no matter how much I like the cold and a spiky dragon boi I can't get on board with their society. Back to Darkstalker, after reading this a lot of Darkstalkers commentary in Moon Rising makes a lot more sense and I got to see a little bit more about how his scroll of god powers works. Whiteout is a character I will forever love and if anyone dare hurts her bad things will happen, I loved how her Icewing and Nightwing genetics mixed and I really enjoy the fanart of her. All in all I really enjoyed this book.
This book hurt me, physically. I don't think I've been able to muster up so much emotion ever since I hit puberty.
Where do I start?
Okay, well first. PAIN PAIN PAIN! There's just Clearsight and Darkstalker being adorable dorks and her wondering what's gonna happen and all the dark futures and I just cry everyday because from the main series, we know that Darkstalker's gonna turn evil and everything hurts when you see them happy and then there starting tension and then they don't see the signs of Darkstalker going insane but you do as the reader and it just hurts.
I swear to god that is what it felt like reading this book. We got to explore the old Night Kingdom and it's beauty and peace and wonderfulness. It was a place of culture where the NightWings thrived and were happy. We stepped into the past. But already reading the main series, and knowing the fates of all the characters in the books, there was no hoping for things to get better, there was no deus ex machina to pull the characters out of trouble, there was just watching in horror as everything unfolded. I don't know right now if this was a weakness or a strength of the book. I felt like there were some parts that were very emphasized in the future that didn't get a lot of attention in this book.
(Jesus, I suck at reviewing)
There were other things about this book, though. I loved how rich the characters were, how three-dimensional and funny they were. The writing is on point, and through the narrative, we could feel the colors and emotions, I could see flashes of pain and fear in my head. I felt a literal knot in my stomach, worrying about Darkstalker and the characters and everything happening. One thing I really have to complement the author on is the fact that we knew what was going to happen to the characters (if you've read the main series), but you still felt the suspense of the events. It was super hardcore.
Agh, I can't. I really can't review. I tried. I attempted. This book is a treasure and I need Tui T. Sutherland's next literary artwork. Everything about this series is gold. I genuinely can't think anymore. I need Talons of Power or I will literally combust.
Edit: Along with not being able to review, it seems I cannot spell or grammar, but I'm too lazy to fix it.

"The hardest thing about being a seer [...] is seeing that the future is always a million possibilities [...] But the past is only one thing. Once something happens, that's it."
