Somehow this book is a Victorian true crime study, a hyper-focused WWI history, and a story of redemption all at once...which I definitely wasn't expecting when I picked up a copy.
It's also staggeringly well researched and written, and was just impressive as hell to read. Come for the historical true crime, stay to get your socks knocked off by the story of the humbling life of Robert Coombes.

Ik vond vooral de achtergrondinformatie interessant over hoe psychologen dachten over kinderen in die tijd en hoe men over die blaadjes dacht. interessant boek wel.

for an account of real historical events, and something I would have never picked up by myself, I definitely enjoyed this novel. not only learning of the case, but further details of the time in which it happened which was particularly interesting.

I found this less compelling than her other books but the last chapter has really stuck with me and I wonder how a similar crime would be treated today.

It's well written and I loved Summerscale's focus on the law courts as well as the social conditions. I felt it dragged a bit at the end, but the very end made up for it because I like the bit about the Aussie family.

A very interesting read - description of life in West Ham was fascinating. The deed done by Robert and Nettie and the presentation of all the research done by the author is intriguing and extensively studied - then the WWI story and Robert’s work as a stretcher bearer and soldier and musician both at Gallipoli and in other battle fronts.
And then the life of Robert on the North Coast of NSW - simple, quiet but then he takes on the care of a young boy ….
Written very well and not in the ‘historical fiction’ style but more as a report with reflections about the actions and outcomes of the individuals in this family.
There is some repetition but I saw that as acceptable when the writer was revisiting the story from various perspectives.

Meh. Felt too long and didn't feel like she answered anything except what happened to Nattie & Robert over the course of their lives. Not a fan.
