At first I couldn't really get into the premise of this book. The action begins immediately and backstory gets filled in as you go, so I didn't end up feeling like I knew or cared about the characters. But, within a 100 pages or so, the fast-paced story had me in its grips and I ended wanting to read the rest of this series. Guess this is why these series do so well with adolescents (and their teachers).

It was okay, pretty cliché and predictable plot but some interesting characters.
So fun and interesting! Another one that brings mythology of all types into the modern world--plus real historical characters that are currently living in the modern world. Add a couple of modern day characters and a prophecy, plus the battle of good versus evil... I had a hard time putting it down!
Rating: ***: An action packed book revolving around magic and mythology. I gave it a three because it was written as a first book in a series (it has an ending but the ending does not have any closure and is really just a set up for the next book).
Genre: fantasy
Main Characters: Nicholas Flamel is an immortal Alchemyst who protects an ancient book that holds within it the secret to eternal life. Dr. John Dee is a magician (among other things) who is trying to steal the book. Sophie and Josh Newman are 15 year old twins living normal lives until they get drawn into the drama when Dee steals the book but not before Josh tears out two pages without Dee knowing it. Pernelle Flamel is Nicholas' wife. She too has been taking the elixar of life and thus does not age.
Summary: Dr. John Dee steals The Book of Abraham the Mage from Nicholas Flamel while Josh and Sophie are present putting the twins' lives and the world in grave danger. Now Nicholas must protect the twins and get the lost book back before Dr. Dee and the Dark Elders can get ahold of the two pages Josh tore out.
Key issues: life and death, mythology, trust, sibling bonds, magic.
Other interesting information: Nicholas Flamel, Pernelle Flamel, and Dr. John Dee were all real people.

The concept is really interesting and I intend to return to it at some point, but I wanted to try some other books for now.

This book was a little boring to me. The whole book took place over 2 days, so I felt like everything was kind of drawn out. It was a cool story and sets the scene for the rest of the series.

I LOVE this book, the way it ties in mythologies is exciting and the detail it goes into which may feel dragging for a slower reader I very much enjoyed, it pulled me further into the story!
