When I first saw this series (the first 3 books) at B&N's I suspected that it would somehow connect to Harry Potter and his way of magic. After all, Nicholas Flamel is the wizard who owned the Sorcerer's Stone in book 1. So I was expecting Flamel to have a wand just like how Harry and his magical peeps have.
But as I've started reading this, it's perfectly clear that Nicholas Flamel doesn't hail from Harry's world. For one, they don't have wands. The other dead give away was that Flamel lives in San Francisco, Ca. Not England.
I like this story though. It's quite intriguing.

This was cute. I'll probably read more in the series, because I want to know what happens, but I kept thinking that I wished JK Rowling had written it.

I listened to this book as an audio version from my library. It was decent, and kept me hooked enough to continue the series. An interesting take on magic.
Thanks to my dear friend Kim for suggesting this read!
I wish it was more linked to the Harry Potter story, but nope. I knew this when start reading! But a fan girl can hope!!
Josh makes me say this a lot; seriously dude!! Don’t be such a wussy and pain in my freaking ass!
It’s a easy read, not that complicated story. A lot - A LOT - of facts though! And somehow I can find a balance in that while reading.
Not bad. Let’s see what book #2 brings us.

I'm tired, so I won't be writing a real review. Here's a summary of what I did and did not like.
The good:
I enjoyed maybe the first half of the book, and I liked Sophie. Flamel was a charismatic character; maybe a bit cliche, but likable.
The bad & the ugly:
Josh. I don't even want to get started with Josh. He was like a more poorly written Edmund Pevensie (also a character I can't stand).
At times, it was easy to forget that the two MCs in this story were in their mid-teens, because it was written on more of a middle-grade level (and not in a good way, because I usually like MG). The writing style reminded me of my high-school friends describing cartoon characters they had drawn. That's the best way I can think to explain it.
There are other complaints, but the last one I will mention is that the background lore felt all over the place. I get why the author wanted to use such a diverse background of myths and legends, but it just didn't mesh well for me.
On the other hand, I think that this would be an easy book to enjoy for the intended age group, especially if the person reading this book is not a writer/not picky about style. I might have liked this book when I was younger, but I think one mark of a good YA/MG book is that it's still palatable for adults.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ 3.5
This reminded me of the Kane Chronicles - WHICH I ABSOLUTELY RECOMMEND.
This was a fun middle grade read which was quick and easy, filled with myths and Gods.
However, I did feel that it lacked depth and sometimes read more like what the author felt he had to write rather than it having true feeling.

I absolutely loved this book! it had a great story line and I"m definately looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
A nice page turner. I think my almost 8 year old will enjoy this book.
