Loved this one - quick and easy read and you get totally sucked in really fast. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
A perfect reading for holiday, with more or less similar destruction level of Harry Potter's series. Destruction to my daily schedule, that is, since this is the type of unputdownable book, not until you've finished.
And oh, another problem is because I'm not in holiday now.

Finished - 6/6/22
I'd like to start this review by saying that no, I did not jump into this book thinking it was harry potter related (I've never read or watched Harry Potter), I also did not think it was about some Flamel dude because I'll be honest and say that 1) I didn't know Nicholas Flamel was real or in Harry Potter and 2) I randomly grabbed this book in a free library so honestly the only thing that gave me a bias was that the author's name was the same as Michael Scott from the Office.
Now to get down to the nitty gritty (not really lol).
The mc's, the twins, ABSOLUTELY pissed me off, they were just so darn annoying throughout the book that I almost couldn't handle it and WOW WHAT A SHOCKER, THE TWINS HAVE SPECIAL POWERS?!?! I did not care if I'm being honest and was partially, majorly, disappointed that BOTH of them have extremely special auras or whatever. However I will say that I did enjoy the description of smells, it's not like it was anything special but I always love a good description of smells and Oh Lord don't even get me started on the damn plot cause my lord.. maybe I should start reading the blurbs of books more... also I wish it was explained why Nicky can't make the spell to stop aging w/o the book but hey maybe it was and I missed it but if it was said in later books then I just wish it was said earlier cause that seems like something important.
A few things I actually did enjoy however was the idea of the Elders and there being dark elders so the future books (that I will never read) have a chance of alliances and such. Everything originating from the Elders was a kinda cute idea too.
I'd say this book just wasn't much my cup of tea

This is a wonderful series. I'd compare it to Harry Potter only for the magical theme of the story. It is a series filled with surprising characters who really add a lightheartedness to the overall theme of good versus evil.

This book was super fun and fast paced. I think it’s super cool that Nicholas and Perenelle Flamel were real people in the 14,15 100’s. Same with John Dee the fact that he was Queen Elizabeth’s spy and his code was 007. That’s really awesome!
This is the kind of fantasy series that's stuffed full of characters from history and mythology, with the idea that they still exist in modern times. I appreciated the way that Scott doesn't always go for the most famous of characters, but pulls more obscure characters out of various mythologies in a way that makes the whole construct feel fresh. The main mortal characters are twins - a boy and a girl - making this handy to recommend to kids who care about that kind of thing. It's a bit dense, but there's plenty of action spaced throughout the story. I never quite clicked with the characters, but this is a series I won't hesitate to recommend to a lot of kids - I'm thinking in particular of kids who've finished up with Rick Riordan (at least for now) and want more books with mythology and action. It's been a popular series at my library and now I know why!
