This book left me with mixed feelings. I love the interspersion of mythology, but I don't like how simple the writing is. Most of the time, I grimaced because the author kept telling me what the characters thought instead of showing me what happened. On the other hand, The author wrote the story for young adults, of course. If I was 10-years-old, I'd be enthralled with this book.
My favorite character is Hekate, mostly due to her attitude and power. I wish she was in the story a bit more, but alas...that isn't the case. Perenelle is pretty cool, too, because she fights back even though she's the "damsel in distress." The twins' personalities start out ok, but then become annoying really fast. They repeat things constantly, and sometimes make no sense. For example, Josh's feelings jumping back and forth very quickly towards the end of the book made no sense to me. I just couldn't believe he actually felt the way because there wasn't conviction and consistency in his actions and words.
I really enjoy the beginning, especially how the book just jumps start into the action. However, there's so much going on in this story that I think it would make a better movie than a book. The story wasn't a fantastic, great, amazing story. It was more of an ok thing. In my opinion, the best parts are the mythology and the clever animal scenes. Josh is really frustrating to read about, and the simple sentences drive me insane because they're flatly stated in a bad way.
However, despite the bad, I want to continue this series. I'm really hoping it gets better.

This is a perfectly fine YA fantasy with some interesting ideas and pretty flat writing
Really good book. Some of the characters seemed a bit lacking in intelligence, which got a little annoying, but apart from that, I loved it. Especially how at the end it explains the facts behind the story, which was awesome, because I love myths/legends/etc...problem is, I've got to read the next 5 in the series now...
This was a fun story! I'll withhold final judgment until I've finished the series. But for now I'll say that I'm plesently surprised and happy to have found The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel!

I would have absolutely gobbled this up when I was 11 and obsessed with myths and legends. Wish I read it then and not now. I just keep thinking about how flat everyone’s motives are. Muhaha evil bad guy who wants to kill everyone is up against fifteen-year-olds twins (obviously good guys) that ooh the prophecy mentions. Maybe I have to read the series to get it but it just wasn’t my thing. Appreciated the queer-coded immortal irish gal though!!
3.5 stars or 7/10
A YA fantasy novel that combines the modern world with history and myth--a lot of history and myth from across the globe and several different historical periods.
Josh and Sophie are the teen twins at the heart of the story, and it is their budding friendship with Perry and Nick Fleming that forms the basis for the story. Perry & Nick are not who they seem, and who they are and what they've been doing (and who is after them) provides the plot. One has to accept the fantastic (after all, this is a fantasy) but one also has to accept some unusual circumstances in the "real" world of this book as well.
How would real teens react if they were confronted with the situations and creatures that Josh & Sophie face in the 2 days that this book covers? I don't know and at some point, the reader has to not care. This is how these particular teens are reacting and that's part of what moves the story forward. They are trapped--by destiny, chance and their own choices.
There were times when I felt the author was trying to combine too many elements at once--too many gods/elders, myths, legends.
And yet, I think I will enjoy seeing what the next days bring in the sequel(s).

Finishing the book with my physical copy.
Book didn’t pick up until almost the end of the story which I didn’t like but otherwise it was good, just not fantastic..
