Somewhere bewteen 2.5-3 stars.
I really enjoyed the first two books. Both 4 stars, despite having some petpeeves or flaws here and there. None of it enough to truly ruin my enjoyment of the magic of the school, how it was constructed, the characters and so forth. This just felt like a let down on way too many levels to describe to me. And I'm not talking about the romance, love triangle etc which I never cared for at all. I just felt like half or more than half of the book wasn't for me and didn't have the same "charm" or how to put like the first two. Basically when I do a re-read of these in a couple of years, I'll forget the existence of book 3. Book 2 is my real ending.

As a side note: I genuine felt upset that El's prophecy was false. I had hoped she was "destined" to go bad but she herself chose not to, to put it simply.

What do you do when you’ve finally escaped the Scholomance effectively destroying lots of monsters and rescuing the entire school… except the one person you might be in love with? Well, I’d be a wreck. But what is El doing? Let’s find out!
Read if you like: contemporary fantasy, magical schools, challenging the system, epic quests, uncovering history, finding a better way, found family, creating safe spaces, redefining good, a boy who saves everyone but himself, and a girl who desperately wants to be good.
El can’t believe that their plan worked. They were able to get everyone out of the school and back to their homes. Everything was going so well, until Orion. Orion ruined everything, again. He saved her one last time and she’ll never forgive him. She can’t anyway because he’s trapped in the school and the school is drifting in the void. He’ll be dead soon if he isn’t already. While frozen in her grief El receives a message that the Enclaves are falling and she might be the only one who can help. She reluctantly but dutifully goes to her friends and in the process discovers a way back into the school and the nefarious history of the enclaves. Can she save the enclaves from destruction and can she wield the magic to create true havens for the magical children of the world.
After such a gut-wrenching cliff hanger I had no idea what to expect from The Golden Enclaves. And what we get is a slower-paced but no-less epic adventure of discovery and world building as El and the gang slowly unearths the horrible history behind the creation of the enclaves. El takes us along on her journey to understand what it means to wield magic outside of the Scholomance and unpack all her new feelings. We get a lot of introspection since she is coming to grips with realty in a way she never quite expected and she’s struggling to see what direction she should take with her powers and the Golden Sutras.
It took me a bit to pivot from the sheer desperation of action that we were left with at the end of The Last Graduate. I was waiting for any sort of quick resolution or understanding but quickly realized we were headed into the depth of processing. Once El and I got our feet under us I was so excited to learn more about the enclaves and how magic worked outside of the controlled terror of the school. We are gifted a depth of knowledge and understanding that the magical communities were built upon. But even more so we get a story of growth and hope and magic in it’s truest and greatest form. An unexpected and wonderful end to this series.

In which El and her friends are finally out of the Scholomance, and immediately have to spend four hundred pages essentially trying to solve the Omelas problem. The reveal, when you realise the exact nature of the bargain their world is built upon, is magnificently managed. Super ending to a new favourite series.

3.5 stars. I do think this was a fitting end to the series but sometimes felt less focused than the other 2 in a way that gripped me a bit less.
