All vibes, no substantive understanding or expression of coherent ideas - not necessarily in the fun way. If you ever needed proof that reading pop-science books about the God Particle and quantum mechanics doesn’t unlock the secrets to the universe, this is it. The wasted potential here was lame. This was 400 pages of repetitive “tell and don’t show”, PG-rated, absolutely boneless, entirely surface-level stuff. Very much what you see is what you get, no curiosity around the themes that are present (the “hippie movement” is referenced just constantly, in a way that asks you to take that generation’s iconography seriously while simultaneously rolling your eyes at the stereotypes of impotent stoners babbling about counterculture and revolution - of course, with no sociopolitical context). Don’t even get me started on the flippant incorporation of actual religious ideas, symbols, and figures. Oh, and if you’re at page 30 realizing one of the main characters is a cop who does police brutality then cites the paranormal as the reason for that violence, and you’re wondering if the book will ever interrogate that with any sort of gravity or respect…
the answer is no. The narrative is exactly the same through the whole book, and none of these characters change or grow at all.

Interesting idea, not a typical haunted house story. The characters were kind of cheesy/ stereotypical which took me out of it.

I liked it a lot, i liked the premise and the collection of journal entries, footage, files to create 1 story. I had a couple problems with the ending, i think it was just explained too much to the reader and wouldve been spookier to draw your own conclusions.

This is the same problem as I had with Suffer the Children - started off really strongly, but petered out towards the end.

Recovered tapes centered around a lost team of paranormal phenomenon explorers.

I thoroughly enjoyed the interview style writing and the mystery throughout the entire book. Ending was very exciting and creepy!

Once the plot is established, it's a fast read! I wanted to read something that was true horror and scared me, and this book delivered! I also recommend the audiobook, there was an actor for each character, sound effects, and music! It was truly like watching a horrifying episode of Ghost Hunters. I can't wait to reread with the physical book!

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

This is not what I thought it would be. I don't like paranormal ghost hunters and then the voice actor for one of the segments put on the worst sounding "old person from the south" accents I've ever heard. And I had to say no.
